Universal Music Group’s Virgin Music Group announced on August 19, 2026 that it has entered a global distribution partnership with Sur Music World Pvt. Ltd., a rapidly expanding Indian label. The deal will allow Sur Music’s catalog of Bhojpuri and other regional songs to be distributed worldwide through Virgin’s network, while Virgin will provide marketing, audience engagement and digital‑platform placement. The agreement is part of Virgin’s broader push into India’s diverse music market, where regional language content is gaining international attention.

Sur Music was founded in 2019 by Surinder Yadav and initially focused on acquiring Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam film titles for digital release. In 2023 the company shifted its focus to music, launching a Bhojpuri‑centric catalog that has quickly become one of the fastest‑growing labels in that genre. Sur Music’s roster includes high‑profile Bhojpuri artists such as Pawan Singh, Shilpi Raj, Pramod Premi Yadav, Arvind Akela Kallu and Khushi Kakkar. The label also aims to expand into Hindi, Haryanvi, Punjabi, Marathi, Magahi and other regional languages.

Under the agreement, Sur Music’s existing catalog and future releases will be distributed through Virgin’s global channels, including streaming services, digital download platforms and physical distribution where applicable. Surinder Yadav said the partnership would “make every step of our journey smoother” and bring Sur Music closer to its goal of reaching a worldwide audience. Nagesh Jadhav, Senior Content Manager for Music & Video at Virgin, highlighted that the deal would “expand the global reach of Bhojpuri music together.” The collaboration is expected to increase visibility for Sur Music’s artists on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and JioSaavn.

Virgin Music Group has been actively signing Indian artists in the past year. In May 2026 it announced a global distribution deal with Punjabi singer Sunanda Sharma, and in June it signed Gujarati folk singer Rajesh Ahir. Earlier in 2026 the company partnered with Hungama Digital Media for global distribution and acquired Outdustry, a rights‑management firm with a presence in China, India and other high‑potential markets. These moves reflect Virgin’s strategy to build a diversified portfolio of regional music that can be monetised across international streaming ecosystems.

The partnership underscores the growing commercial value of regional Indian music on the global stage. Bhojpuri music alone generated an estimated $120 million in revenue in 2022, with digital downloads accounting for 65% of that figure and international markets contributing 30%. By leveraging Virgin’s distribution network, Sur Music can tap into the 3.2 billion YouTube views that the genre attracts annually, while also accessing the broader audience base of global streaming services. For Virgin, the deal strengthens its foothold in India’s largest music market and aligns with Universal Music Group’s goal of expanding its independent‑label distribution arm. The collaboration will likely influence other international distributors to pursue similar agreements with regional labels, accelerating cross‑border exposure for niche music genres.

The deal is expected to launch in the coming weeks, with Virgin’s marketing team preparing a global rollout plan that includes playlist pitching, social media promotion and targeted advertising. Sur Music’s artists will retain creative control and ownership of their recordings, while Virgin will handle distribution rights and revenue collection. The partnership also opens the door for future collaborations, such as joint production ventures or co‑branding initiatives, that could further integrate regional Indian music into mainstream global playlists.
