Marquee TV Secures Exclusive Streaming Rights to Sheku Kanneh-Mason Documentary
The film follows 27‑year‑old British cellist Sheku Kanneh‑Mason as he traces the sounds that shaped his career—from the lilting strains of Welsh folk to the unmistakable groove of Bob Marley, the lyrical depth of Leonard Cohen, the pulse of hip‑hop, the swing of jazz, and the soaring cadences of 19th‑century composers such as Franz Liszt and Felix Mendelssohn.
Viewers will see Kanneh‑Mason perform Mendelssohn’s Song Without Words alongside his sister Isata, a pianist, and will catch archival footage of the seven‑member Kanneh‑Mason family playing together on the children’s programme Yo Gabba Gabba and their 2015 appearance on Britain’s Got Talent. The documentary offers a rare, intimate look at the family’s musical upbringing and Kanneh‑Mason’s ascent to international acclaim.
Kanneh‑Mason first broke into the spotlight in 2016 when he became the first Black musician to win the BBC Young Musician award since the competition began in 1978. Since then he has performed with the Chineke! Orchestra—the first European professional orchestra composed mainly of Black and ethnic‑minority musicians—and appeared at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018. His 2020 album Elgar made him the first cellist to reach the UK top 10 album chart.
Berlin‑based C Major Entertainment, which boasts a catalogue of over 3,000 hours of content, produced My Favourite Melodies. The acquisition deal was negotiated by Elmar Kruse, a representative of C Major, and the rights will be exclusive to Marquee TV worldwide.
"We’re excited to bring this documentary to our audience," said Marquee TV’s Vice‑President of Content & Engagement, Cecilia Beacon. "Kanneh‑Mason’s universal appeal—reaching far beyond traditional classical audiences—combined with his standing as one of the world’s foremost cellists, makes this a unique acquisition for us."
The film’s release fits Marquee TV’s strategy to broaden its arts catalogue beyond opera and theatre. By adding a contemporary classical documentary that blends personal narrative with diverse musical influences, the platform aims to attract viewers who might not normally seek classical music content.
My Favourite Melodies will be available on Marquee TV’s subscription‑based service, which operates in multiple regions and offers on‑demand access to dance, opera, theatre, and music documentaries. The platform’s global reach means the film will be accessible to audiences in North America, Europe, Asia and beyond.
Premiering on 21 June 2026, the documentary arrives amid a growing interest in artist‑led narratives that showcase the breadth of classical musicians’ influences. Kanneh‑Mason’s career—marked by crossover performances and a commitment to making music accessible—positions the film as a timely addition to Marquee TV’s expanding arts library.
As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, Marquee TV’s acquisition of My Favourite Melodies underscores its commitment to delivering high‑quality, culturally relevant content worldwide. The release is expected to spark discussion about the role of classical musicians in contemporary music culture and could influence future collaborations between streaming services and classical artists.
The documentary will remain exclusive to Marquee TV for the duration of the licensing agreement, which has not yet been disclosed. Subscribers can stream the film at any time from 21 June 2026.
