Surfdog Records Announces 20th-Anniversary Enhanced Edition of Clapton-Cale Collaboration
Surfdog Records, in partnership with Bushbranch, has announced the forthcoming release of The Road to Escondido: Enhanced Edition, a commemorative edition of the 2006 collaboration between Eric Clapton and JJ Cale. The new edition will be issued on November 20, 2026 and will be available digitally, on 180‑gram Rusty Red & Sky Blue vinyl, and as a double CD set. The release includes three previously unreleased tracks from the original sessions, three live recordings from the 2007 Live in San Diego concert, and new liner notes.
The original album, released on November 7, 2006, brought together two guitarists who had long admired each other’s work. The record blends blues, rock, country and folk influences and features contributions from Billy Preston, John Mayer, Derek Trucks, Taj Mahal, Pino Palladino, Steve Jordan and Doyle Bramhall II. In 2008 the album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album and was dedicated to Preston and Brian Roylance.
The Enhanced Edition’s track list expands the original 14‑song set with three bonus tracks—“Wrong No More,” “I Got To Find My Baby” and “Roll On”—all recorded during the 2006 sessions. It also adds three live tracks recorded on March 15, 2007 at the iPay One Center in San Diego: live versions of “Who Am I Telling You?,” “Anyway The Wind Blows” and “Don’t Cry Sister.” The vinyl edition will feature 180‑gram Rusty Red and Sky Blue pressings, while the double CD will include the full 20‑track set.
The first single from the edition, “Roll On,” was released today and is accompanied by a music video. The track features performances by Billy Preston and John Mayer and showcases the collaborative spirit of the original sessions. Pre‑orders for the Enhanced Edition are currently available through Surfdog’s website, and the release will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original album.
Clapton has long spoken about Cale’s influence, noting that Cale’s understated style shaped the sound of many guitarists. In a statement released with the announcement, Clapton said, “People are unaware of how important he is in the tree of musical history….” The album’s title references Escondido, a city near Cale’s home in Valley Center, and the road that connects the two locales.
