Bob Seger Releases First Digital Version of 1986 American Storm Video
The original video debuted on MTV in 1986 and was one of two versions created for the single. The first version consists solely of live performance footage of Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. The second version intercuts that performance with staged scenes featuring actors James Woods, Randy Quaid and Lesley‑Ann Warren. Those scenes were directed by Brian De Palma, the filmmaker known for Scarface and Carrie. Although the second video was formatted to resemble a music video tied to a feature film, no such film was produced.
“American Storm” was the lead single from Like a Rock, released in March 1986. The single peaked at No. 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album itself entered the Billboard 200 at No. 3. Other singles from the album include the title track, “It’s You” and “Miami.”
Like a Rock marked its 40th anniversary in March 2026. In April, Seger’s live album Live Bullet, recorded in 1976 at Detroit’s Cobo Hall, celebrated 50 years. Seger himself turned 81 in May. These milestones have been highlighted by the release of the new video and by the continued streaming of his music.
Seger’s 1994 compilation Greatest Hits remains on the Billboard 200, positioned at No. 135 this week, one spot lower than the previous chart. The album has accumulated 618 weeks on the chart, a record that spans nearly twelve years. It is certified Diamond by the RIAA. In addition, Seger’s Spotify page has launched a playlist titled Bob Seger Sweet Summertime, which compiles 17 of his most popular tracks and is now available for streaming.
The digital release of the “American Storm” video, combined with the anniversary commemorations and the sustained chart presence of Greatest Hits, underscores Seger’s enduring relevance in the rock catalog. Fans can view the newly available video on YouTube, explore the curated Spotify playlist, and follow the artist’s continued activity on social media and streaming platforms. The release also coincides with the 40th‑anniversary promotion for Like a Rock, offering a refreshed visual companion to the album’s classic sound.
