Aydn Releases Debut Album From Memory on Goldfat, Blending Drum & Bass, Garage and Personal Reflections
Label‑touted as an “honest record about memory, reckoning, and letting go,” From Memory weaves liquid drum & bass grooves with the syncopated swing of UK garage and the warm undertones of soul. Its cover photograph—a Polaroid‑style snapshot of a young Aydn on a bike, captured by his father—sets the nostalgic tone that threads through the album’s soundscape.
In an interview with UKF, Aydn explained that the title reflects his philosophy of sampling as a way of preserving musical memories. He said, “I love the idea that you can chop up a sample however you like, but it’s still got that link back.” The album remains 100 % human‑made, a point he stressed during the interview. Tracks like “Akaroa” nod to the New Zealand beach town where he has lived for the past six months, while “0117” references his former Bristol address. The vocal loop that begins the record resurfaces in “Voicemail” and the closing track, “did you miss me,” tying the LP together.
Aydn’s production journey began under the aliases Hydrology and Ayben in 2014, after piano lessons and a conversation with a tutor that sparked his interest in digital audio workstations. He later joined a Discord community that hosts feedback streams, where his demo “No Ride Home” first caught the eye of Goldfat’s Jonny Mitekiss. The single received a UKF premiere and paved the way for a full album deal. Aydn handled every element of the record himself, crediting only his father for the artwork.
While the drum & bass scene has been his primary audience, Aydn’s reach has widened. In May 2025, Carl Cox played his track “Gaijin” on BBC Radio 6, an unexpected moment that Aydn described as a surprise “shuffle” from Spotify. The track, originally released on Goldfat and highlighted in a UKF premiere, caught Cox’s attention and brought the song to a broader listenership.
Now living in New Zealand, Aydn is performing in Queenstown and looking for more DJing opportunities. He expressed a desire to “keep pushing with releases while I do some more DJing,” and hinted at exploring heavier garage and 140‑tempo tracks, noting that the boundaries between garage, house, and drum & bass are increasingly blurred.
From Memory marks Aydn’s first full‑length release on Goldfat after a series of singles and EPs that established his presence in the liquid drum & bass community. The album’s blend of personal storytelling and genre‑crossing production offers a fresh lens on the evolving electronic music landscape. It is available for purchase and streaming on Beatport, Bandcamp, and other major digital platforms. Looking ahead, Aydn plans additional releases, expanded DJ work across New Zealand, and the possibility of extending his visa beyond the current two‑year period.
