U.S. Navy Band Closes WASBE Conference in Gwangju, Kicking Off Fleet Week Music Fest
The WASBE conference, held from July 16 to 20, brought together over 2,000 musicians from the United States, Germany, Spain, France, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea. The event featured wind ensembles, conductors, and music experts, and included clinics and masterclasses led by leading figures in the wind band world.
The U.S. Navy Band’s final concert marked the end of a week of musical exchange that also included joint performances with the Royal Australian Navy Band, the Royal Swedish Navy Band, the Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines Portsmouth, the Marinemusikkorps Kiel, and the 2nd Marine Division Band. These collaborations were part of the broader Fleet Week program, a U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard tradition in which recently deployed ships dock in major cities for a week of public tours, demonstrations and aviation displays.
In addition to the main band, the event showcased a variety of ensembles. The Commodores jazz ensemble, Country Current, Navy Band Northeast’s Jack Tar Brass Band, and Rhode Island Sound performed at Father Duffy Square. Chamber groups also appeared throughout the week, and audiences could enjoy ship tours, receptions and aviation events organized by the Navy and its partners.
The U.S. Navy Band, based in the Washington Navy Yard, has served as the official musical organization of the U.S. Navy since 1925. Its repertoire spans ceremonial music, classical, jazz, rock and country, and the band regularly performs at presidential inaugurations, state arrival ceremonies and other high‑profile events.
According to the conference schedule, the final concert was followed by a series of joint military concerts that will continue throughout the week. The Navy Band’s participation in the WASBE conference underscores its role as a cultural ambassador and its commitment to fostering international musical collaboration.

The U.S. Navy Band’s performance was well received by the audience, adding a distinctive American wind band tradition to the event’s diverse program.
Fleet Week in Gwangju is part of a global series of naval celebrations that allow the public to experience naval life and heritage. The week’s concerts, ship tours and aviation displays provide an opportunity for cultural exchange and community engagement.
